Our design team spends a lot of time thinking about the details - whether that’s an environmentally-conscious fabric that washes well and is easy to take care of, breastfeeding-friendly buttons down the front of tops and dresses, or those all-important pockets at the hips.

It Has Pockets!

Designing dresses with pockets is something we believe in wholeheartedly because it’s a surprisingly political issue. Historically - at least in the Western world - dresses were designed without pockets because women had less autonomy and weren’t expected to carry around things like money.

While men’s clothing featured pockets as standard from as early as the late 1600s, women’s dresses often didn’t. According to a 2023 New York Times article, “[in the past], people blamed fashion and women’s vanity for a lack of pockets… because pockets could mess with the line of a dress or garment, especially if they were filled with stuff.”

Over the course of the 20th century, pockets became increasingly common in women’s clothing. Still, though, it can be hard to find dresses with pockets even today. We believe wholeheartedly that dresses can be both fashionable AND functional, which is why so many of our beloved Joanie Icons have pockets!
