Today’s Scripture: And he called the multitude, and said unto them, Hear and understand: Not that which goes into the mouth defiles a man; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defiles a man. But those things which proceed out of the mouth comes forth from the heart; and they defile the man. (Matthew 15:10, 11, 18 KJV)
These verses represent an outward religion that leaves the heart desperately wicked. It is not what food that defiles, but what comes out of the mouth which is from the heart. The mouth is the instrument used for receiving food. While food enters through the mouth, the thoughts of a man exit by way of his heart. The evil in a man will show itself from the heart through the mouth. It is what exits the mouth that defiles a man. Defile means to render; to make unclean or impure; to corrupt the purity or perfection of.
It is in the heart that wickedness dwells. All evil that comes out of a man are fruit of wickedness which resides within man’s heart. The heart is the organ that gives expression to inward thoughts. It is the core of our being. The heart makes a man think that he is holy and righteous when he is far from that.
The total depravity of man is seen throughout the Bible. Man is held captive by sin from birth due to the fall of Adam, therefore he does not seek God (Rom. 3:10-11). Because we are totally deprived of God the sinful lifestyle seems right to a man. Man looks at the outward appearance and judges them to be good, while God looks at the motives of man’s heart.
There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.(Prov. 14:12)
It is clear that all of man is affected by sin and it is only by the sovereign grace of God that He draws a man to a state where he has the ability to accept or reject Him. It is only after God infuses spiritual life into a man that he can see the kingdom. This is the sovereign act of God. Society teaches that man is good and that his environment by which he is raised causes the conditions of the heart. When in all actuality the true fact of the matter is that we all are affected by a universe set on the course of sin.
God know every secret within the heart (Ps. 44:21). He examines our deepest motives and inward desires. Only by His power can the depravity be untangled for He alone searches all. He does not abandon us in our struggles. He gives us the grace and strength to overcome the sin nature. He removes our stony hearts and replaces it with a heart of flesh (Ezek. 11:19). His desires then become our desires and His will becomes our will. After this we have peace and oneness with Him.
Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. (Psalm 51:10-11 NIV)
