God’s Collection of Tears

Screenshot_2014-07-21-04-22-18-1Today’s Scripture: Thou tellest my wanderings; put thou my tears into thy bottle; are they not in thy book? (Ps. 56:8 KJV).

God taking notice of our tears, bottling  and remembering them is a metaphor. In ancient times the custom was, when a person was ill or in great distress, his friends would visit him and take with them a tear bottle. As the tears rolled down the cheeks of the sufferer they were caught in these bottles, sealed up, and preserved as a memorial of the event. This is what David referred to in Ps. 56:8. Put thou my tears into thy bottle. Are thy not in thy book?

“Thy book” refers to the “Book of Remembrance” spoken of in Malachi 3:16. Remembrance refers to the act of remembering a person, thing or an event; or the state of bearing in mind. Forgetfulness has no place with God because He never forgets. The expression is used only to bring a picture to our minds, but our deeds are forever present with God.

The meaning of the text is that God would take notice of David’s afflictions and troubles, which had caused him many tears. That God would remember them and deliver him out of his troubles. That his tears would be put into a bottle, kept and reserved. Not to make atonement for sin, for a thousand rivers cannot extinguish the guilt incurred by one’s sin. Neither can many rivers of sorrowful tears obtain heaven or happiness. There is no comparison between the sufferings of the saints and the glory that shall be revealed in them. Although, there is a connection of grace through the promises of God between them.

It has been said that God has a bottle for our tears and a bag for our sins. So precious is the water that is distilled from penitent eyes.  It was a precious ointment wherewith Mary Magdalene anointed the feet of Christ. Unbidden tears rose into her eyes and fell on the Master’s feet as he reclined on the couch. She kneeled and began to wash his feet with her tears and then she anointed them with fragrant ointment, (Luke 7:36-38). This is a heartfelt act of repentence that our Lord passionately remembers. He has graciously recorded this account for all to remember.

The book of remembrance was written before him with us in mind. The tears of sorrow and shame will be turned into joy, and God will wipe them all away from the eyes of his people. No more crying or pain, only everlasting joy.

Love, peace and joy be unto you!

    1. Hi Olivia! Thank you for your comment. I agree. According to Romans 8:28, God makes all things for our good, according to His purpose just because we love Him. (Romans 8:28). Our tears won’t last for long because joy comes in the morning! 🙂
