Scripture: “Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common?”; (2 Cor. 6:14 NIV).
Fire and Ice cannot bind, just as oil and water do not mix. Do not be bound together with unbelievers. A yoke is a wooden bar that joins two oxen to each other and to the burden they pull. Examples of unequally yoked things are, “stronger and the other weaker, a taller and a shorter, a smarter and a foolish.” To be unequally yoked means there are hindrances in the relationship. Instead of working together, they are at odds.
Light and darkness have nothing common. As a Christian, walking in the light means to act responsibly and live openly. It means that you relinquish all sin to follow the example that Jesus set for us. Jesus said, he who follows me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life. God’s very nature is light; in Him there is no darkness at all (1 John 1:5). The man without the spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned; (1 Cor. 2:14-15).
What do righteousness and wickedness have in common? What fellowship can light have with darkness? What harmony is there between Christ and Belial? What does a believer have in common with an unbeliever? What agreement is there between the temple of God and idols? For we are the temple of the Living God, as God has said, “I will dwell in them and walk in them; I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Therefore, come out from among them, says the Lord; (2 Cor. 6:14-16).
Most Christians are faced with temptations and spiritual attacks. Believers and unbelievers have nothing in common. They both have different mindsets and principles. No one can serve two masters. You will hate one and love the other. 1 Cor. 15:33, tells us that bad company corrupts good character. You run the risk of mimicking the world’s behavior and possibly returning to the sinful life you left. (Did you really leave your past behind?) The unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom. To become involved romantically with a non-believer is a recipe for disaster. It’s an open door inviting trouble to enter. You set yourself up to take a fall.
Have you exchanged the truth for a lie? Truth warns us that light and darkness have nothing in common. As Christians we are not to shun non-believers, we are to tell others of the love of Jesus Christ. We are ambassadors to a dying world. We are light in a dark world. We are witnesses to the people and evangelists to the lost. Our primary focus is to share the Gospel with others and to demonstrate the love of Christ. We are to stand firm against ungodly influences, against false teaching and a watered-down gospel. We are physically present, but not a part of the value systems of this world. The world’s ways are contrary to God’s ways; (2 Cor. 4:4).
As believers we are set apart, holy and blameless, living a righteous life in Jesus Christ. We are called to worship God. The world is what we left to come to Christ. We are citizens of God’s kingdom. Heaven is our home; to love the world is idolatry. We are to love God and not the things of this world. Eternal salvation is only found in Jesus Christ. Walk in the light of life, and leave the past where it belongs, behind you.
Blessings to you!
