When a Man Loves a Woman

As I was getting my day started, a particular song came to mind that I haven’t heard in years, but suddenly I started singing it. The title of the song is, “When A Man Loves A Woman”.

I wasn’t thinking of anything that could have remotely prompted me to sing this song. With a puzzled expression, I asked myself, “Why am I singing this song?” and “Where did this memory come from?”

After some time had passed that day, I remembered that my parents owned a vinyl record and they use to play it on their Hi-Fi stereo record player. I also remembered that it was a #1 hit on the radio charts back in the day. But it wasn’t a number one hit for me because I was a child at the time.

At first, I thought that these memories resurfaced from the deepest part of the Rolodex of my mind. However, because I’m a spirit filled Christian, I know that the Holy Spirit brought these memories to my mind. The Holy Spirit is the wisdom of God and His job is to bring all things to our memory. It is our job to search the matter further for the history and background information. So, I did a Google search and found the lyrics to the song and a bit of history about it. I believe that reading the lyrics will give you an idea of how hard a man can fall deeply in love with the woman of his dreams. Regardless of her feelings for him, the love that he feels will stand strong. Here are a few versus…

When a Man Loves a Woman, by Percy Sledge
When a man loves a woman,
Can’t keep his mind on nothin’ else.
He’d change the world for the good thing
he’s found.
If she is bad, he can’t see it.
She can do no wrong,
Turn his back on his best friend if he put her down.

When a man loves a woman,
He’ll spend his very last dime
tryin’ to hold on to what he needs.
He’d give up all his comforts
And sleep out in the rain,
If she said that’s the way it ought to be.
Well, this man loves you, woman.
I gave you everything I have,
tryin’ to hold on to your heartless love.

I think these lyrics express the true heart of the man being mirrored in the song. This man loves this woman more than himself, and he expresses his love and desire for her vividly. His feelings run deep mentally, physically and emotionally. His affections for the woman has consumed his entire being and he’s completely given all of himself to be with her.

Let me inform you that there is a movie by the same title starring Andy Garcia and Meg Ryan. Garcia’s character was deeply in love with Ryan’s character, who is an alcoholic. It didn’t matter how drunk she got, her husband took care of her and tried to help her. It didn’t matter how badly she treated him, he stayed with her because he loved her. What’s Love Got To Do With It?

A beautiful life doesn’t just happen, it’s built daily by prayer, humility, sacrifice and love. Sacrificial love of ones-self and total commitment are essential to survive the truest test of time. Commitment means “a state or quality of being dedicated to a cause” along with a few other descriptive synonyms that real love hinges on, such as devotion, loyalty, fidelity, faithfulness, and allegiance. Before marrying anyone make sure that you have a full understanding of the quality of their character before you agree to marry them. The vows that you take attaches you to that person ’til death do you part.

Men are visual creatures and they know what they like and want in a woman. Wives, don’t take your husband’s compliments lightly. When he tells you that you’re beautiful, believe it. When he showers you with love, receive it. He loves you for who and what you are, his WIFE.

“10 times out of 10, he doesn’t see your imperfections. His main interest is in loving you for you!”
Know Your Worth and the Value of Your Family

Ladies, outward adornments have no heavenly value. Spiritual things outweigh earthly possession due to their loss in value, they are subject to rust and decay; (Matt. 6:19). Heavenly treasures have great rewards. For where your treasure is there your heart will be; (Luke 12:34). Build your happiness on a noble and certain foundation.

Christians ought to keep their commitment to one another from a willing mindset and in obedience to the command of God. A husband’s responsibility to his wife implies giving due respect to her while maintaining his authority. He willingly places his trust in her and protects her. Wives should be subject to their husbands, not from dread, but from a desire to do well, and to please God. Couples are heirs together of all the blessings of this life and that which is to come.

The Value of Prayer

Maintaining a prayer life as a family is vital, it creates a level of peace within the home and provides a solid foundation on which the family is able to stand on. Parents should include their children in prayer, and teach them by example how to pray. The family that prays together, stays together.

Jesus gave his disciples a lesson on how to pray; (Matthew 6:9-13). The Lord’s Prayer is a model prayer, given as an example to them and to us. Refer to it often, especially when you don’t know what to pray. Always keep God first in all that you do and everything else will be added unto you; (Matt. 6:33).

In the Bible, 1st Corinthians Chapter 13 is referred to as “The Love Chapter”. This chapter covers the subject of love and also provides an in-depth description of what love looks like. Picture this…

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others. It is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil, but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails; (1st Cor. 13:4-8a NIV).

John 3:16 provides a vivid picture of God’s greatest sacrifice for all of mankind…

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

We’ve come to the end of this journey, and I’ve decided to let it end with the original rendition of “When A Man Loves A Woman”, by Percy Sledge. I hope that something was said to open the eyes of your understanding to not only see the love a man has for a woman, but that you will realize the love that God has for you. A love so strong that He thought that you were worth dying for. Salvation is the free gift of God!
