Our Steps Are Ordered By The Lord

Scripture: The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord; (Ps. 37:23).

Whenever I read this Scripture, I’m reminded of a song recorded by Award Winning Gospel Artist Fred Hammond. One particular line in the song says, “Your steps are ordered before the world was framed.”

These lyrics brought a couple of questions to my mind, “Did God actually count every step that each person would take from the time He created us? Did He literally orchestrate the directions of every step that we would take from the beginning into eternity?

The Bible states that God’s thoughts are vast, and His ways are incomprehensible. We have testimonies that God has numbered our days, numbered the stars, and every strand of our hairs are numbered as well; (Ps. 139; Matt. 10:30; Gen. 15:5; Luke 12:7). Our God is very personal, and each and every detail of His designs are intricate.

Upon doing my research, I delve into other study materials with hopes of finding answers to my questions. I discovered that there are several Bible version that replaces the verb “ordered” with “established” or “directed.” When something or someone is established, it means that it’s been in existence for a long time. Literally, it means that it’s fixed and/or stable.

The Psalmist David said, “Direct my footsteps according to your word; (Ps. 119:133). Your word is a lamp unto my feet and light unto my path”; (v. 105). David would not take one step without God leading the way. He knew the importance of walking in the statutes of God’s Word. He kept His commandments and was faithful to do them.

God has given mankind free will, meaning that we’re able to choose either our way or His way. But, how can this be true if our steps are ordered by the Lord? Did He calculate the step that we would take in opposition to His ordered steps for us?

Let’s look for clarity in the Scriptures below:

a.)   A man’s heart plans his course, but the Lord determines (establishes, directs) his steps (Prov. 16:9 Amp.).

b.)  Man’s goings are of the Lord; how can a man then understand his own way? (Prov. 20:24)

c.)   There is no wisdom, understanding, nor counsel against the Lord; (Prov. 21:30).

Are you walking in step with God?

When we’re living a surrendered life, God directs our comings and goings, and we’re able to walk upright before Him because He keeps us in all of our ways (Ps. 91:11). Our walk is secure, so we don’t veer to the left but remain on the righteous path. Let the heart of man consider what is just, that his steps may be directed by God; (Jere. 10:23).

How is free will free, when our steps have been ordered by the Lord? Have you counted the cost of overriding God’s will for your life?

Anything that you implement has to be maintained by you. You cannot call on God to help you succeed with your plan when He already has a good plan for your life; (Jere. 29:11). You are the overseer of everything that you create. God will not come on as a hireling to help fund your idea. He’s God! The CEO of the Universe. The Maker of Heaven and Earth. The Author and Finisher of our Faith. He gives life, and He can resurrect dead things. He also controls time, including seasons. With God, nothing is impossible.

Have you counted the wrong steps that you’ve taken?

If you haven’t factored in those mistaken steps, first understand that those steps were ordered by you, and they were not a part of God’s plan. God is a gentleman; he gave us the freedom to choose His will or our own way. But, be very careful because wrong steps can cost you the kingdom. Don’t get distracted and be misled in the wrong direction. Submit yourself to God, and He will speak to you and guide you. As you surrender to God’s will, all things will work for your good and God’s glory.

  1. How wonderful to know that when we trust God we cannot get lost because He has already set, established, directed and ordered the way for us to go, This is a powerful devotion.
